How to reach Austria's hot springs
Vienna and Salzburg are the gateways. The Gastein Valley is on the rail line south of Salzburg; Styria's thermen (Bad Blumau, Loipersdorf) are easy from Graz or Vienna by car.
Where Austria's springs cluster
- Gastein Valley — Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein — grand hotels, the famous waterfall, radon therapy tradition.
- Styria — Bad Blumau's Hundertwasser architecture and the family thermen of the east.
- Burgenland & Carinthia — Lake-side thermen near the Hungarian border.
Best time to visit
Winter for ski-and-therme combos; summer for Alpine hiking plus evening soaks. Shoulder seasons are quiet and good value.
Good to know
Sauna areas are traditionally nude and mixed — thermal pools require swimwear. Quiet is the rule in Austrian thermen; loud groups stand out. Many thermen offer evening "long sauna nights" with special rituals.
