Choose your kind of soak

Whether you're traveling with family, seeking a quiet retreat, or looking for mineral-rich waters, France has a spring for you.

France invented thermalisme as a medical art: doctors still prescribe three-week cures at the great spa towns. Beyond the clinics, the Pyrenees and Auvergne hide 36 listings of gorgeous mountain springs, and Corsica adds wild Mediterranean pools.

How to reach France's hot springs

Paris for the overview; Toulouse or Pau for the Pyrenees; Clermont-Ferrand for the Auvergne. Trains serve the classic spa towns (Vichy, Dax, Bagnères-de-Luchon). A car is best for the high Pyrenean valleys and Corsica.

Where France's springs cluster

  • Pyrenees — Ax-les-Thermes' free footbaths, Bagnères-de-Luchon, and Cauterets' mountain terme.
  • Auvergne — Vichy's grand halls, Le Mont-Dore, and Royat by the volcanic ChaĂ®ne des Puys.
  • Southwest — Dax — France's biggest spa town — and the Basque country springs.
  • Corsica — Wild mountain pools in the island's rugged interior.

Best time to visit

May–June and September for hiking-plus-soaking; winter for ski-and-spa combos in the Pyrenees. August is peak domestic holiday season — book ahead.

Good to know

Swim caps and proper swimwear are the norm (no shorts in many pools). The "cure" tradition means some towns feel medical rather than leisurely — embrace it. Many Pyrenean outdoor pools are free and open year-round.
