How to reach Iceland's hot springs
Fly into KeflavĂk; Reykjavik is the base for the Golden Circle lagoons. The Ring Road opens the north (MĂ˝vatn) and the Westfjords' remote pools — a rental car is the way to do it. Super-Jeep tours reach highland springs in summer.
Where Iceland's springs cluster
- Golden Circle & Reykjanes — The famous lagoons plus Reykjavik's beloved municipal pools.
- North Iceland — Mývatn's milky-blue nature baths and valley hot rivers.
- Westfjords — Remote fjord-side pools like Hellulaug — often entirely empty.
- South coast — Hot river hikes (Reykjadalur) and black-beach adjacent tubs.
Best time to visit
Year-round, honestly. Winter brings northern lights over steaming water; summer brings midnight-sun soaks. Shoulder months (May, September) balance daylight, weather and crowds.
Good to know
Showering naked before entering pools is mandatory and taken seriously — it keeps the minimally-chlorinated water clean. Weather changes in minutes: bring layers even in July. Highland roads (F-roads) need 4WD and are only open in summer.
