Choose your kind of soak
Whether you're traveling with family, seeking a quiet retreat, or looking for mineral-rich waters, Portugal has a spring for you.
Portugal's hot springs are termas: iron-rich volcanic pools in the Azores and historic spa towns across the northern and central mainland. Nearly all are paid spa complexes — 28 listings of proper, old-world thermal culture.
How to reach Portugal's hot springs
Lisbon for the mainland; Ponta Delgada (SĂŁo Miguel) for the Azores. The northern termas towns (Chaves, GerĂŞs) are best with a car from Porto. SĂŁo Pedro do Sul is an easy hop from Viseu.
Where Portugal's springs cluster
- Azores (São Miguel) — Terra Nostra's orange thermal pool in a botanical garden, Poça da Dona Beija, and Ferraria's ocean spring.
- Northern Portugal — Chaves' Roman baths, Gerês, and Pedras Salgadas' spa park.
- Central Portugal — São Pedro do Sul — among the oldest recorded spas in the country — plus Luso and Curia.
Best time to visit
May–June and September–October. The Azores are mild year-round but wetter in winter. August crowds hit the mainland termas.
Good to know
Only a couple of Azorean pools are free — budget for entry fees. Terra Nostra's iron-rich water famously stains swimwear orange (wear an old suit). Many mainland termas towns are quiet out of season, which has its own charm.
