The good boss, Parallel mothers and Mediterranean are the three titles that the Spanish Film Academy has shortlisted for the category of Best International Film at the Oscars 2021. No surprise with the choice of Pedro Almodóvar’s film, nor with that of Fernando León de Aranoa, since both were they came rumored. The third candidate is the work of Marcel Barrena. None of the three have been released in theaters yet, but they will do so during the month of October.

Verónica Echegui, accompanied by the president of the Academy Mariano Barroso, has been in charge of announcing the three films shortlisted for the most important awards in the film industry. It is not the final verdict, since On October 5 we will know who is finally chosen to represent our country.

Parallel mothers -première on October 8- is Pedro Almodóvar’s new project with Penélope Cruz. It tells the story of two women who face motherhood from two very different sides. Ana is a young woman who lives the moment of childbirth with terror, while Janis is more mature and can help her partner. The birth of babies on the same day and the same hospital will mark their lives forever.

On the other hand, The good boss will be released on October 15 with Javier Bardem as the protagonist. It focuses on a factory owner awaiting a visit from a committee that could present him with a major award. He hopes all the problems are fixed before they come to inspect him, but a former worker shows up at the gates.

Finally, academics have taken into account Marcel Barrena’s film on the migration crisis that Europe is experiencing in recent years. Two lifeguards played by Eduard Fernández and Dani Rovira travel to Lesbos after being deeply affected by the image of a child drowned in the waters of the Mediterranean. It hits theaters October 1.

The previous year the selected one was The infinite trench, the film directed by Jon Garaño, Aitor Arregi and José Mari Goenaga that tells the life of a man who spent more than 30 years locked up in a hiding place in his house after the dictator Franco took power in Spain. However, she was not nominated by the Academy. Previously, the bet of our country was Pedro Almodóvar and his Pain and glory. This time we did have a nomination – even Antonio Banderas opted for the Best Actor statuette – but nothing could be done against him. Parasites by Bong Joon-ho, which also won the Oscar for Best Picture.

The 94th edition of the Oscars will take place on March 27, 2022 at the traditional Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. After the atypical gala that took place on April 26, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is expected to return a little to normal. As happened last year, feature films that were to be released in cinemas but have reached the public through a streaming platform may be selected, something that did not happen before the pandemic.
