North America
566 hot springs
North America has the widest range of soaking on the planet: 500+ listings from free wilderness pools on public land to full-service desert resorts. The American West is the heart of it, the Rockies, the Cascades and the Basin and Range are one long geothermal seam, with Canada's mountain hot springs and Mexico's canyon country rounding out the map.
How to reach North America's hot springs
Fly into Denver for the Colorado Rockies, Salt Lake City for Utah and Idaho, Reno or Las Vegas for Nevada's desert springs, and Seattle or Portland for the Cascades. A car is essential, non-negotiable for most wild springs, and many backcountry pools need high-clearance or 4WD, especially after rain or snow. Canada's Rockies springs pair with Calgary; Mexico's pair with Chihuahua or Mexico City plus a long drive.
Where the springs cluster
- Colorado Rockies — The densest concentration in the US: resort towns (Glenwood, Pagosa) mixed with free creekside pools along forest roads.
- Idaho backcountry — Dozens of free river-side soaks in national forests, many reached by dirt road or short hike. The connoisseur's state.
- Nevada & the Eastern Sierra — Desert playa-edge pools and the developed resorts of the Owens Valley, under the Sierra crest.
- Pacific Northwest — Forest hot springs in Oregon and Washington, from developed lodges to clothing-optional creek pools.
- Canadian Rockies & Mexico — Banff and Radium in Canada; Copper Canyon country and Baja in Mexico.
Best time to visit
September–October is prime: stable weather, fall color, warm water against crisp air. Winter brings epic snow soaks but closes many forest roads, check conditions. High-elevation pools are best after snowmelt (July–August). Desert springs are most comfortable October–April.
Good to know
Leave No Trace is the law of the land at wild pools: pack out everything, no soap in the water, and keep noise down. Many backcountry pools are clothing-optional by custom, read the room. Always test water temperature before getting in; undeveloped sources can scald. Winter access sometimes requires snowmobile or skis, and cell service is often absent, download offline maps.
