Why water makes your speaker sound muffled

Your iPhone speaker produces sound by vibrating a tiny diaphragm. When water gets trapped behind the speaker mesh โ€” after rain, a spill, or a drop in the sink โ€” it weighs the diaphragm down. The result: that classic “underwater,” muffled sound on calls, music and alarms.

โš ๏ธ Do NOT use rice or a hairdryer. Rice absorbs moisture from the air around the phone, not water trapped behind the speaker membrane. Heat is worse โ€” it can warp the delicate diaphragm and melt internal adhesives, turning a fixable problem into permanent damage.

Step-by-step: remove water safely

1. Power off and unplug

Turn the iPhone off immediately and disconnect any cables. This prevents short circuits while moisture is inside.

2. Tap out the excess water

Hold the phone with the speaker grille facing down over a dry cloth. Gently tap the edge โ€” gravity plus light taps dislodge the biggest droplets.

3. Use sound to eject the rest

Play a low-frequency pulsed tone (165 Hz works best). The violent diaphragm vibration ejects trapped droplets through the mesh โ€” the same principle as Apple Watch Water Lock. Run it for 60 seconds, speaker facing down, volume at 100%.

4. Air-dry for 30โ€“60 minutes

Leave the phone in a dry spot with airflow. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources.

5. Test the speaker

Play audio at low volume. If it’s clearer but not perfect, repeat the sound treatment once more.

When to seek repair

If the speaker is still muffled after 24 hours of drying, or produces no sound at all, water may have corroded internal components โ€” especially with saltwater exposure. Take it to a repair shop promptly; corrosion spreads.
