How sound waves push water out of your speaker

Your phone speaker makes sound by vibrating a tiny diaphragm thousands of times per second. When water gets trapped behind the speaker mesh, it adds weight to that diaphragm โ€” that’s the muffled, “underwater” sound you hear.

The fix uses the same physics in reverse: play a targeted low-frequency tone (around 165 Hz) and the diaphragm vibrates so violently that trapped droplets are physically ejected through the grille. This is exactly how Apple Watch’s Water Lock feature works after a swim โ€” we’ve adapted the principle for any phone, laptop or Bluetooth speaker, in your browser.

๐Ÿ’ก Why 165 Hz? Low frequencies move the diaphragm far (large excursion), pumping air and water out. Mid frequencies (1โ€“3 kHz) move it fast with small travel โ€” ideal for shaking fine dust loose. Our Deep Clean program chains both.

Three modes, one goal: clear sound

๐Ÿ’ง Water Eject ยท 165 Hz pulsed

A steady 165 Hz sine wave, pulsed 4 times per second. The pulsing creates sharper pressure spikes than a flat tone โ€” better at breaking water surface tension on the mesh.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Dust Clean ยท 250 Hz pulsed

Rhythmic 250 Hz bursts agitate lint, pocket dust and sand sealed into the grille holes, then the airflow carries them out.

โœจ Deep Clean ยท 4 automatic stages

Stage 1: Water Eject (165 Hz, 60s) โ†’ Stage 2: Dust Sweep (2000 Hz pulses, 45s) โ†’ Stage 3: Resonance Sweep (120โ†’220 Hz sweep, 45s) โ†’ Stage 4: Final Clear (165 Hz, 30s). Ends with a test tone so you can hear the difference.

What it can’t fix

Sound waves clear blockages โ€” water, dust, lint. They cannot repair a torn diaphragm, corroded coil or dead amplifier chip. Rule of thumb: if the speaker is still completely silent after cleaning and a restart, it’s hardware โ€” see the FAQ on when to visit a repair shop.

โš ๏ธ Safety: never use heat, hairdryers or rice on a wet phone โ€” heat warps the diaphragm and adhesives. Never hold the phone to your ear while cleaning tones play, and stop immediately if you hear rattling or distortion.
