The rice myth, explained
“Put your wet phone in rice” is the most repeated โ and least effective โ phone advice on the internet. Here’s the physics of why it fails:
Rice absorbs moisture from the air around the phone. But the water ruining your sound is trapped behind the speaker membrane, sealed inside the device. Rice sitting outside the phone cannot reach it โ it’s like trying to dry the inside of a bottle by leaving it next to a towel.
Three more reasons to skip the rice
- Too slow. Even surface drying takes 24โ48 hours in rice. Meanwhile corrosion is spreading on internal contacts โ speed matters more than desiccant.
- Starch and dust. Rice powder gets into the charging port, speaker mesh and buttons, creating new blockages.
- False confidence. The phone “feels dry” while the speaker chamber is still wet โ so people power it on and short something.
What actually works
Sound-wave ejection. A 165 Hz pulsed tone vibrates the speaker diaphragm so violently that trapped droplets are physically thrown out through the grille โ in about 60 seconds, not 48 hours. It’s the same principle Apple built into Apple Watch Water Lock.
Silica gel (if you must use a desiccant) beats rice โ but it still only handles surface moisture. For the speaker itself, vibration is the answer.
