The Best Time to Visit Hot Springs

There’s no single best season — the answer depends on where you’re going and what kind of soak you want.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): the classic. Steam rising into cold air, snow on the banks, empty pools. Japan’s snow-view rotenburo, Iceland’s lagoons and the Rockies are at their most magical — but check road access.
  • Spring & autumn: the sweet spot for most regions. Mild air, fewer crowds, and in Japan, cherry blossoms or fiery foliage framing the water.
  • Summer: best for high-elevation pools that are snowbound until July, and for combining soaks with hiking. Desert springs are an oven — go at dawn.
  • Shoulder months (May, September): the insider pick — decent weather, thin crowds, lower prices.

Timing within the day matters too: sunrise soaks beat every crowd, and many famous lagoons sell timed entry — the first and last slots of the day are quietest. Weekdays beat weekends everywhere on earth.
