Choose your kind of soak

Whether you're traveling with family, seeking a quiet retreat, or looking for mineral-rich waters, Hungary has a spring for you.

Budapest is the world's great thermal city — more than a dozen historic baths fed by 120+ hot springs — and the countryside adds Hévíz, the largest swimmable thermal lake on earth. With 29 listings, Hungary is thermal bathing as a way of life.

How to reach Hungary's hot springs

Budapest is the hub; most famous baths are on the metro. Hévíz is 2 hours by bus/car near Lake Balaton. Eger and Miskolctapolca are easy day trips or overnights from the capital.

Where Hungary's springs cluster

  • Budapest — Széchenyi (the yellow palace), Gellért (art nouveau), Rudas (Ottoman octagonal pool + rooftop).
  • Hévíz — The thermal lake — float among water lilies year-round.
  • Eger & the north — Turkish-era baths in a baroque wine town; Miskolctapolca's cave baths.

Best time to visit

Year-round — the outdoor pools steaming in winter air are the signature experience. Summer brings the famous "sparties" at Széchenyi.

Good to know

Bring flip-flops and a towel (rentals exist but cost). Swim caps are required in lap pools, not thermal pools. The Széchenyi chess players are real and welcoming. Hévíz water is genuinely therapeutic — and genuinely hot in the crater.
