Choose your kind of soak

Whether you're traveling with family, seeking a quiet retreat, or looking for mineral-rich waters, Japan has a spring for you.

Japan's onsen culture is the most refined bathing tradition on earth: wash first, soak in silence, respect the water. With 81 listings here โ€” from 1,000-year-old mountain towns to rotenburo baths staring at snow peaks โ€” it anchors all of Asia's hot-spring travel.

How to reach Japan's hot springs

Tokyo and Osaka are the gateways; the JR Pass makes multi-town onsen tours easy and economical. Famous towns like Hakone are day trips from Tokyo, while Kyushu's Beppu and Hokkaido's Noboribetsu deserve dedicated legs. Rural onsen villages usually need a local bus or taxi from the nearest rail station.

Where Japan's springs cluster

  • Kanto & central Honshu โ€” Hakone, Kusatsu and the alpine onsen of Nagano โ€” easy from Tokyo.
  • Kyushu โ€” Beppu's steaming "hells", Kurokawa's riverside rotenburo and the historic castle-town baths of the south.
  • Kansai โ€” Arima's gold and silver springs behind Kobe, and Kinosaki's seven public bathhouses in a willow-lined town.
  • Hokkaido & Tohoku โ€” Noboribetsu's "hell valley" and the deep-snow onsen of the far north.

Best time to visit

November for autumn foliage and Januaryโ€“February for snow-view rotenburo โ€” the two classic seasons. Avoid Golden Week (early May) and New Year, when the famous towns are packed. Weekday visits are calmer everywhere.

Good to know

Wash thoroughly at the showers before entering any bath, keep your small towel out of the water, and stay quiet. Most traditional onsen are gender-separated and nude. Tattoos were long banned; many places now accept cover-up stickers, but check the listing before you go.
