Choose your kind of soak
Whether you're traveling with family, seeking a quiet retreat, or looking for mineral-rich waters, New Zealand has a spring for you.

How to reach New Zealand's hot springs
Auckland or Rotorua for the thermal heartland; Christchurch for Hanmer Springs and the South Island. A rental car or campervan is the classic way to tour — distances are short by global standards.
Where New Zealand's springs cluster
- Rotorua–Taupō — The geothermal core: spa parks, free riverside hot streams, Māori-owned experiences.
- Hanmer Springs — Alpine resort pools in a mountain village setting.
- Coromandel — Hot Water Beach — dig your own pool in the sand at low tide.
- West Coast — Wilderness springs in rainforest country.
Best time to visit
Year-round — steam looks best on a crisp winter morning. Summer (Dec–Feb) is peak domestic travel; shoulder months are quieter.
Good to know
Natural geothermal features can be dangerously hot and unstable: never bathe in unmarked parkland pools. Respect Māori protocols at culturally significant sites — some waters are tapu (sacred). Hot Water Beach only works within two hours either side of low tide.
