174 hot springs
Asia's bathing culture is the world's most ritualised. Japan's onsen tradition — wash first, soak in silence, respect the water — has been refined over a thousand years, and it anchors the region. Around it: Korea's social jjimjilbang bathhouses, Taiwan's Beitou valley, Turkey's Ottoman hamams, and a fast-growing scene across Southeast Asia.
How to reach Asia's hot springs
Tokyo and Osaka are the gateways to Japan's onsen country — the JR Pass makes multi-town onsen tours easy. Seoul covers Korea's spa cities; Istanbul covers Turkey's western thermal belt. For Southeast Asia, fly into Hanoi, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur and travel overland. Domestic buses and trains reach most famous spring towns; rural onsen villages may need a local bus or taxi from the nearest rail station.
Where the springs cluster
- Japan's onsen towns — Hakone and Kusatsu near Tokyo; Beppu's "hells" and Kurokawa's riverside rotenburo in Kyushu; Noboribetsu in Hokkaido. Over 80 listings.
- Korea — Busan's Hurshimchung, Suanbo's mountain alkaline waters, and resort-style oncheon towns with jjimjilbang complexes.
- Turkey — Pamukkale's travertine terraces, the Afyon thermal hotel belt, and Bursa's Ottoman-era Çekirge baths.
- Taiwan & Southeast Asia — Beitou's valley, 30 minutes from Taipei; plus emerging listings in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Best time to visit
November for autumn foliage soaks and January–February for snow-view rotenburo in Japan — the two classic seasons. Avoid Golden Week (early May) and New Year crowds. Turkey's coast is best in spring and autumn; Southeast Asia's springs are year-round, though the monsoon months (roughly June–October) can complicate rural travel.
Good to know
In Japan: wash thoroughly at the showers before entering, keep your towel out of the water, and stay quiet — the onsen is a shared meditation. Tattoos were traditionally banned; many places now accept cover-up stickers, but check ahead. Most traditional onsen are gender-separated and nude. In Korea's jjimjilbang, the nude bathing areas are also gender-separated, with mixed-gender common areas in clothed "sauna wear".
