Oceania
67 hot springs
Oceania soaks in two completely different worlds. New Zealand sits on a live volcanic zone — Rotorua steams, mud boils, and the bathing culture runs from luxury spa complexes to free river pools. Australia's heat comes from the Great Artesian Basin: ancient underground water rising through bores into outback pools under enormous skies.
How to reach Oceania's hot springs
Fly into Auckland or Rotorua for New Zealand's thermal heartland; Christchurch for Hanmer Springs and the South Island. For Australia, fly into Melbourne or Sydney and drive to Victoria's spa country (Daylesford/Hepburn), or into Brisbane/Longreach for the outback artesian trail. Outback springs demand a reliable vehicle, full fuel, and serious water supplies — distances are vast.
Where the springs cluster
- Rotorua–Taupō, New Zealand — The country's geothermal core: commercial spa parks, free riverside hot streams, and Māori-owned bathing experiences.
- Hanmer Springs & the South Island — Alpine resort pools at Hanmer plus West Coast wilderness springs.
- Great Artesian Basin, Australia — Outback Queensland and South Australia: bore-fed pools at remote stations and caravan parks.
- Victoria's spa country — Daylesford and Hepburn Springs — Australia's historic mineral-springs region, an easy drive from Melbourne.
Best time to visit
New Zealand's geothermal springs are year-round — steam looks best on a crisp winter morning. For Australia's outback, travel April–September to avoid brutal summer heat (bore water stays warm regardless). Victoria's spa towns shine in autumn.
Good to know
New Zealand's natural geothermal features can be dangerously hot and unstable — never bathe in unmarked parkland pools; stick to managed or well-known local spots. In the Australian outback, tell someone your plans, carry 5+ litres of water per person per day, and have a satellite communicator — there is no cell signal between bores. Respect Māori protocols at culturally significant sites in NZ.
